Class Descriptions
March 31-June 6

  • Applications accepted now through March 26, even during Spring Break.
  • Applications MUST BE turned in at the Kids Center Office.
  • Sign up for your class or classes NOW…limited number of student space per class. The classes fill quickly.
  • Bank Tuesday classes will be offered immediately after school and one hour later for the second time slot.
  • Bank Tuesday will End on May 6th and all Tuesday classes will be after school at 2:45pm.
  • On School Minimum days classes will begin after lunch at 1:00pm… 4/10 and 6/2
  • On School holidays there will be NO classes…5/26
  • On rainy days, outdoor classes will be instructional and moved into a classroom.
  • Make-up classes will be offered the week of June 9th- June 13th.

 

ACTING ON CAMERA:          2nd grade- 5th grade         (Friday @ 2:45pm- 3:45pm)                     15 Students           $120
This exciting class will feature theatre games, improvisation, and sensory work with scripts both on stage and on camera. Students will learn to use their own unique personalities. This class will include camera work with video play back, and will lead to video tape of some of their performances as a memento tapes will be provided to all students. ADVENTURES WITH WILDLIFE: Kinder - 2nd grade     (Tuesday @ 1:45pm-2:45pm)       15 Students           $110           
Spring is here and a lot of cute animal babies are here! Learn about the fascinating world of Animals. Their behaviors, what they eat, how long they live. Their habitats around the world and are being destroyed everyday. Learn how to help them and the environment before they become endangered or extinct. Hands on experience with snakes, lizards, turtles, mammals and more!
Be a wild child and explore the animal world!!! Instructor: Hollie Dickinson; Eco-Wildlife teacher, Animal Caretaker of two Bobcats and two African Servals, Big cat and all around animal expert. 

ADVANCE WILDLIFE:           3rd grade - 5th grade      (Tuesday @ 2:45pm-3:45pm)                 15-20 Students           $110
Explore your options for ANIMAL CAREERS. If you are passionate about animals come and learn about the different types of careers to help animals. See what it takes to become a wildlife specialist, animal trainer, animal rescuer, animal caretaker, veterinarian technician, veterinarian, scientist, discover new species of animals in the jungle, work with fish and wildlife, park ranger, Bindi Irwin and her amazing animal rescue, have your own rescue or work with one like the World Wildlife foundation. These are some ideas for careers, we will learn about them, what the job duties are, how and where you have to go to school. ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS: 1st grade & 2nd grade      (Tuesday @ 1:45pm-2:45pm)                      14 Students           $110
Explore Ancient Civilizations starting with Ancient Egypt with Mrs. Lowenstein. Boys and Girls are you ready to learn fun and exciting Social Studies join the class and have a blast. Instructor: Mrs. Lowentein, Kindergarten-Sherman Oaks Elementary Science Teacher. 

BASEBALL:                            Kinder & 1st grade          (Monday @ 2:45pm- 3:45pm)                     10 Students           $110
Boys and Girls will perform the fundamental skills in fielding, throwing, bating and running the bases.  Learn to Love the game!  Instructor: Brian Houlihan

Learn, practice and improve your dribbling, passing, shooting and more through drills and games.  This class is for boys and girls who currently play basketball as well as beginners. Instructor: Melanie (Mel) Gregorian

BASKETBALL:                       2nd grade-5th grade     (Wednesday @ 2:45pm-3:45pm)                       15 Students         $110
This level of class will introduce players the skills and strategies of Basketball. Players will be divided into separate teams to test and develop their ability in various game-time drills. Boys and Girls come and play with one of our own 4th grade teachers Mr. Cook. 

BEGINNING SOCCER:           Kinder & 1st grade        (Thursday @ 2:45pm-3:45pm)                      14 Students          $110
Students will work on the basic skills of soccer, dribbling, passing, shooting with their feet the first half hour of class and the second half of class students will scrimmaging against one another. Instructor: Brian Houlihan

CARTOON COMICS:             4th grade-5th grade        (Thursday @ 2:45pm-3:45pm)                      10 Students          $110
Students will learn to combine writing and art to create their own comic books.  Each class will focus on the basics of storytelling (including plotting, story structure and scripting), the basics of sequential art (including page layout, shot selection and basic drawing), and the integration of the component parts into a complete comic. Instructor: Neal Yamamoto

CHEERLEADING:                  Kinder & 1st grade         (Friday @ 2:45pm-3:45pm)                         12 Students           $110
Bring it On, in this energetic class, students will memorize simple cheers and learn the basic skills needed to perform fun and exciting routines. This class teaches fundamental drill techniques from dance, hip hop, and lots of jumping and bouncing around!!! Instructor Linda Ojeda
DRAWING FOR FUN:                         Kinder & 1st grade         (Thursday @ 2:45pm-3:45pm)                     15 Students                $110
Learn how to draw Wild Animals, Ocean Creatures, Rainforest favorites and Polar Bears in their special habitats. Fun and exciting portfolio for all the kids’ art will be made with our own Ms. Todd. Instructor: Kim Todd, 2nd grade-Sherman Oaks Elementary Teacher

FUNDAMENTAL GUITAR:    3rd grade- 5th grade        (Thursday@ 2:45pm-3:45pm)               6-10 Students               $160
This introductory guitar class will expose the student to music theory fundamentals and basic guitar techniques, enabling the student to perform simple pieces by the end of the course. A minimum of 20 minutes of daily practice will allow your child to absorb and learn the given material. Handouts will help parents to learn along with their children while providing positive encouragement. This class fee includes a guitar that students take home. Instructor: Henry Turner 19 years experience providing private guitar, bass and vocal instruction Beginner level to advanced guitar in styles such as jazz, electric blues, acoustic blues, and rock.

JUMP START FITNESS:         2nd grade - 5th grade        (Monday @ 2:45pm-3:45pm)                      15 Students         $120
Keeping fit is not just a fad- it’s a way of life. Whether your children wants to slim down or tone up, or have more energy for school or other outdoor activities, or just want to look and feel better- we’re here to help.  This class offers simple fitness levels that will allow children to have fun and stay fit. Children will all receive their own individual jump rope to work out with and take home. Throughout the 10 weeks our goal is to teach and promote good exercise with fun and exciting work outs. KARATE:                                1st grade - 5th grade     (Wednesday @ 2:45pm-3:45pm)        15 Students          $140
Karate 4 Kids USA is Los Angeles’ Premier Children’s Karate Program.   Designed specifically for children, our classes are the most enthusiastic and energetic in town, teaching children skills necessary for growth and success.  Karate 4 Kids USA introduces your child to the exciting adventure of Martial Arts in a fun and creative way.  Karate emphasizes self-control, coordination, balance, flexibility, strength, stamina and discipline in a safe, supportive and noncompetitive atmosphere. Children will learn blocks, kicks and other karate techniques.  The children will learn and practice moves without any contact to each other.  This program is designed to help build confidence and self-esteem.

KIDS KUISINE:                      Kinder – 2nd grade             (Friday @ 2:45pm-3:45pm)                     15 Students          $130
This session we will be making new fun, easy and delicious recipes that students will be able to recreate at home.  Each class will include a cooking experience as well as lessons on how to read and follow a recipe, measurements, substituting ingredients and creating your own recipe.  Instructors:  Jennifer Valles

LEARN TO KNIT:                   4th grade-5th grade           (Monday @ 2:45pm-3:45pm)                     15 Students          $120
Beginning knitting…Learn the basics of knitting by learning how to make c-scarf using knitting and purl stitches…Join this class and get creative while having fun with our own Ms. Hirschkoff, 5th grade teacher.  

ICKY, STICKY SCIENCE:      Kinder Class Only      (Wednesday @ 2:45pm-3:45pm)                     15 Students         $120
It’s time for Slime! Students will have an icky, sticky time with 10 different simple and educational “hands-on” science experiments…All experiments are made from items found at home, class includes recipe cards with instructions, samples and basic learning concepts. INTRODUCTION TO ORIGAMI: 3rd grade-5th grade                (Thursday @ 2:45pm-3:45pm)                      10 Students           $115
Come join this class to and explore the wonders of origami. What does origami mean? Ori= to fold and gami= paper… It’s the art of the process of folding paper into shapes, such as, representing flowers and birds and other decorative projects. This class will teach students how to follow specific directions and will be able to construct their creation. Instructor: Marcia Ozeki, our own Sherman Oaks Elementary Kindergarten teacher  

MAGIC OF THEATRE:           Kinder - 1st grade           (Monday @ 2:45pm-3:45pm)                   15-20 Students         $110
This fun class is a great introduction to the magic of theatre.  The young actor explores acting through story telling, animal exercises, fairy tales, comedy & improvisation, as well as voice and movement. This is a wonderful class to build the younger actors self esteem by helping them learn to trust their own unique imagination. Instructor: Michelle Snyder, teacher for The Young Actors Studio

MATHEMAGIC;                     2nd grade-5th grade          (Friday @ 2:45pm-3:45pm)                         15 Students         $140
MatheMagic combines the enchanting tools of Magic with the brain-teasing aspects of Math to create an intellectual and entertaining activity that not only enhances students’ problem solving, logic, and lateral thinking skills, but also teaches them that Math can be fun!  Taught by Professional Magicians, each participant also receives the opportunity to win cool prizes each week like certificates, medals, and trophies! NOVICE VOLLEYBALL:       3rd grade-5th grade              (Friday @ 2:45pm-3:45pm)          12 Students         $115
Boys and Girls want to learn and grasp the familiar techniques of spiking, passing, blocking and setting by learning the basic fundamentals of the fun sport volleyball. Instructor: Marymanne Vaneges, skilled and alumni of the sport.

INTRODUCTION TO THE RECORDER:   Kinder-2nd grade   (Wednesday @ 2:45pm-3:45pm)           15Students         $110          
Whether you want to be a singer or play in a band, this class will help you get started. Not only will we learn to play familiar and new songs on the recorder, but we will also teach the fundamentals important for all musicians and vocalists, such as, reading music.

PAPER MAGIC:                      2nd grade- 5th grade       (Monday @ 2:45pm-3:4pm)             15 Students          $110
In International Paper Magic students will learn that there is more to paper art than just cutting out shapes. Students will experience projects that include, African Masks, an Andy Warhol-style Picture and Frame, “Gupit-Gupit” art and more! The projects are simple enough that anyone can do them but the finished product is amazing! This class is designed to enrich students with cultural background of each paper art form.      Instructor: Maryanne Vanegas and Stacy Jacobson               

SEWING/ADVANCED SEWING: 2nd grade – 5th grade           (Thursday @ 2:45pm-3:45pm)            17 Students         $130 Ever wonder how to make pillows or how our clothes are made? Time to learn how to sew! Explore the fun and amazing world of sewing! You will discover how to do basic stitching by hand. We will do 3 take home projects! Calling all girls and boys, this is good stuff to know!!! Believe it or not we did not always use machines to make things! 
* returning students will do different projects and continue learning the fun world of sewing!
** Bring your own sewing kit if you have one** not required!

Tennis is a great sport t
hat anyone can learn to play! You will learn everything about the game including; forehand, backhand serving, keeping retrieving balls! Rackets are supplied at each class; however you may bring your own if you have one.
Instructor: Coach Jerry Rush has coached several professional top 10 players in the world and top juniors.

YOGA FOR KIDS:                   Kinder - 2nd grade       (Wednesday @ 2:45pm-3:45pm)                      12 Students          $110
Boys and girls will be skillfully guided through playful, imaginative and constructive activities that will capture their attention. Focus is on integrating, challenging and activating the whole child inspired by imagery and relaxing music. Students will be provided with mats, remember to dress in comfortable clothing to allow for movement.  Instructor: Karen Kadens is a graduate from the Yoga Ed. Program for children and the White Lotus Foundation in Santa Barbara.

WRITE AND PUBLISH:          1st grade– 3rd grade    (Wednesday @ 2:45pm-3:45pm)                15-20 Students            $110
Sharpen you writing skills!!! Learn how to organize your paragraphs with fun step by step teaching instructions, express your creative work by publishing your stories every other week of class. Instructor: Kim Todd, 2nd grade-Sherman Oaks Elementary Teacher
