SCHOOL
FOR ADVANCED STUDIES
(SAS)
Current legislation
(AB-2313) requires
school programs
to meet the differentiated
instructional needs
of gifted and talented
(GATE) students.
At Sherman Oaks
Elementary School,
our School for Advanced
Studies (SAS) Program
complies with more
rigorous standards
which require that
our program be organized
and differentiated
as an integrated
part of the regular
school day.
Differentiated instruction
for gifted and talented
students must build
on the core curriculum
and supplement it.
Sherman Oaks Elementary
is committed to
encouraging and
supporting academic
excellence in students
from groups traditionally
underrepresented
at the highest levels
of achievement and
in students who
have already exhibited
extroaordinary aptitude
or attainment.
Students are grouped
for instructional
needs to ensure
maximum opportunities
for peer interaction
in flexible learning
groups. Sherman
Oaks Elementary
clusters students
in a Full Day model.
Each SAS class is
composed of:
- Identified
gifted students
- Students
who are being
screened for
recommendation
- Students
who are recommended
for continued
screening and
advanced instruction
Administrators,
teachers and support
staff are required
to participate in
professional development.
Training includes:
screening and identification
procedures; characteristics
of the gifted and
talented student;
differentiated instruction;
goals and objectives
of acceleration
(pacing) levels
of complexity, depth
and novelty; and
expectations for
student production
appropriate to individual
learning interests,
assessed needs,
and abilities.
MUSIC PROGRAM
All students in
grades 1 - 5 participate
in weekly music
instruction provided
by our music teacher.
Students in grades
4 and 5 may participate
in our school chorus.
SOPA funds three
days of music instruction
each week, supplementing
the one day per
week funded by LAUSD.
ART EXPLORERS PROGRAM
Grades 1 - 5 participate
in weekly art history
and hand-on creative
projects as they
learn about artists
from prehistoric
through classic
and contemporary
times.
The SOPA funded
Art Explorers program,
currently in its
10th year at Sherman
Oaks Elementary.
Our
first five weeks
of Art Explorers
has been great fun
and very successful
for our students.
We started with
a lesson on lines
and shapes, went
on to a color mixing
lesson and then
a shading lesson.
We created very
vibrant outer space
pictures using our
color mixed shapes
and shading techniques.
Next we worked with
perspective and
we would like to
thank Emely Navarro
in Mrs. Hirschkoff’s
5th grade class
for giving us a
great idea on showing
overlapping with
her pop-up picture.
Last week we learned
how to draw realistic
human figures showing
body expression.
Our next few lessons
will include working
with pottery, Chinese
scrolls, Greek mythological
figures and drawing
still lifes.
Your children love
coming to art and
we thank you for
your continued support
for this wonderful
program.
