Stop, Drop &
Roll!
This wonderful program was developed by concerned
SOPA parent Bill Shaffer in 2001. This morning drop-off program, staffed entirely by parent volunteers EVERY DAY RAIN
OR SHINE at both the Greenleaf and Dickens gates has effectively
reduced traffic congestion and improved safety. When
dropping off your child in the morning, please drive WESTBOUND
ON GREENLEAF or EASTBOUND ON DICKENS. Pull over in the
designated areas and have your child ready to go when our volunteers
open the door of your vehicle. :
****Please Note that on Dickens there are two (2)
seperate Drop and Roll areas. EASTBOUND, the 1st area is for
KINDERGARTEN ONLY (rm's 20-22), and the second is for Grade
1-5.****
When you pick up your child after school, please obey the
posted parking regulations, be considerate of others, exercise
caution and patience, and courteous to our neighbors (please
do not honk horns or block driveways). DOUBLE PARKING
IS BOTH ILLEGAL AND UNSAFE!

a.m. to 2:29 p.m.
Early dismissal on Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m. begins October 2007
and continues through May 2008.
ARRIVAL TIME:
Children are to arrive at school no earlier than 7:45 a.m. as
the playground is not open and there is no supervision. Students
arriving to school after the gate is closed at 8:15 a.m. are
to come to the main office and will be sent to their rooms after
being marked tardy.
AFTER SCHOOL PLAYGROUND:
The after-school playground is open daily from 2:29 p.m. through
6:00 p.m. When dismissal is earlier as on Tuesdays beginning
on October 25th or scheduled minimum days (12:40 p.m.) the playground
will be open. Please read bulletins carefully to be aware of
any change to the school hours. The playground activities are
under supervision of the Youth Services Playground Director
Rene, Coach Lissette and Coach Gian. When leaving from the after-school
playground activities, children should observe all safety rules
that apply during regular hours. The playground is NOT a childcare
facility and students may come and go as they please. As a reminder,
the Dickens gate and main Greenleaf gate is locked at 2:45 (15
minutes after dismissal on shortened or minimum days) as a security
measure. Parents can enter the school grounds through
the office or the smaller Greenleaf gate on the east side of
the office. For our before and after school child care
program, please call the Kids Center at (818) 786-4121.
SCHOOL ATTENDANCE and RETURN FROM ABSENCE:
Punctual and regular attendance is vital for the education of
each student. Students will be recognized for perfect attendance
and less than 3 tardies at recognition assemblies. At the end
of the school year students with perfect attendance will receive
a SPECIAL recognition. If your child is absent or tardy longer
than 30 minutes from school, we ask you to provide your child
with a signed and dated note stating the reason. Please include
the number of days for an absence. Students without a note for
absences are considered "unexcused." Three "unexcused"
absences or three tardies of longer than 30 minutes are considered
truant by the District and may result in meeting with school
or District staff. Certain types of illness absences require
special permission for readmission to school. These are:
1. Permission of Local Health Department- A disease which has
caused a full quarantine; any case of ringworm of the scalp.
2. Permission of Physician or School Nurse – Hepatitis,
measles, (seven days from onset of rash and otherwise recovered),
meningitis, mumps, polio-militias, scarlet fever, strep throat,
whooping cough, and tuberculosis.
MEDICATION:
District policy states that no pupil shall be given any medication
during school hours EXCEPT upon written request from a licensed
physician. These forms are available from the school nurse.
NO MEDICATION MAY BE BROUGHT TO SCHOOL BY STUDENTS. Parents
shall deliver any medication to be administrated under the provision
of this policy. Medication must be clearly labeled with the
students full name, name of medication, schedule of dosage,
name of physician and telephone number.
RELEASE OF STUDENTS:
Students are not allowed to leave campus during school hours.
The only exception to this rule is when the student has been
sign-out by a parent or a designated person listed on the students
EMERGENCY card or with a written confirmed note from the parent.
Students cannot be released to someone under the age of 18 years
old. Students must check out through the office when leaving
and check in upon return. For the safety of the students we
do not deviate from these rules.
CAFETERIA:
Breakfast is served from 7:45 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. for $0.60.
"Second Chance" Breakfast served during recess for
$0.60. Lunch is a balanced meal (including milk) for $1.00.
All students are issued a cafeteria "debit card,"
which is the only way to purchase breakfast, lunch or snack.
Money can be added to a students card on a daily, weekly, or
monthly basis, depending on the amount needed for purchases.
Children add money to their account by giving the money to their
teacher in the morning or a parent may add to their account
by giving the money to the office for the cafeteria. At the
end of each month the cafeteria manager will issue a small receipt
slip with the amount left in your child's account. The slip
is easy to overlook so ask your child for it.
Please try to refrain from bringing a "FAST FOOD"
lunch to school for your child during the school day. We truly
want to encourage healthy nutrition.
Children should be encouraged to bring only enough money for
their "debit card." When the Sherman Oaks Parent Association
(SOPA) begins to sell pizza after school, students may bring
additional money.
SAFETY WHEN ARRIVING AND LEAVING SCHOOL:
If your child walks to school, please be sure that he/she knows
and consistently follows the route which is the safest for him/her
and that he/she crosses at corners and obeys all the signals.
Children should be instructed to follow the plan you and he/she
have arranged for after school. If they are walking remind them
to go straight home and not to talk to or accept rides or gifts
from strangers.
Three of our schools most hazardous safety problems are double
parking, children being dropped off in the staff parking lot,
and children crossing in the middle of the street to meet parents
waiting on the other side. Double parking and crossing in the
middle of the street can result in a traffic ticket. Being dropped
off in the staff lot can be very dangerous.
CLOSED CAMPUS:
Sherman Oaks Elementary adheres to the LAUSD closed campus policy.
ONLY during the first week of school are parents allowed to
escort their children to the class line and follow the children
to the class. When the 8:15 a.m. bell rings, parents are asked
to leave the campus. In the fall each MONDAY morning parents
are invited to stay on campus for the school-wide recognition
assembly. The recognition assembly may move to Monday afternoons
in the winter and spring.
VISITORS:
Visitors are welcome to come to the school during the year.
Before entering campus and maintaining safety, all visitors
must obtain a VISITORS PERMIT from the office indicating authorization
to be on campus. We ask that you limit classroom visits to twenty
minutes. During your visit you may not disturb classroom activities
by asking questions of the teacher or students.
VOLUNTEERS:
Adult Volunteers are warmly welcomed. If you are interested
in volunteering please indicate so to the teacher or office.
There are many ways to help on campus. The Sherman Oaks Parent
Association (SOPA) always has activities in which someone can
be helpful.
STUDENT INSURANCE:
The LAUSD does not provide accident insurance for your child.
Insurance packets with information about a student accident
plan with hospital-medical, dental and accidental death benefits
will be available from the school office.
BICYCLES:
Students in grades 4 and 5 may ride bicycles to school if they
wish. Bicycle permits are distributed upon request. Riding a
bicycle to school is a privilege that can be revoked if a child
does not ride safely. To ride safely students must have the
bike licensed, wear a helmet when riding, and the have the knowledge
of bicycle traffic rules. The school cannot assume responsibility
for any damage occurring to bicycles while at school. Bicycles
must be locked down. The student must provide the lock. All
reasonable precautions are taken to see that bicycles are secured
during the school day.
WEAPONS ON CAMPUS:
Any student who brings a weapon, real or imitation, to school
WILL be subject to suspension or expulsion.
MESSAGES FOR STUDENTS/PHONE CALLS/CELL
PHONES:
As a matter of school policy, phone messages will not be delivered
to students during the school day. Transportation plans and
other daily routine matters should be discussed before school.
A public telephone in the office hallway is available for student
use during lunch or after school. We do understand that emergencies
do arise, but please make every effort in the morning to review
the plans for the day with your child(ren). Cell phones
brought to school must be turned off during the school day.
If they should ring during the school day, they may be taken
from the student and returned to the parent at the end of the
school day. The school takes no responsibility for the
loss of personal electronic devices.
